A guide to mentoring
If you are going to try to mentor a new guild member, your aim is really twofold: (i) to develop a friendship with them and (ii) to provide timely information to help them enjoy their expeience of WoV/FS. The following guidelines should help you to achieve both tof these aims.
COMMUNICATE! If there are three main rules of mentoring, they would have to be: (i) talk; (ii) talk; and (iii) talk. You'll only develop a relationship with your newbie by constantly talking to him/her (and not just about the game). Keep an eye on them, and let them know if they are holding too much gold, or if there is better equipment to use, or which buffs they should look for. But remember that you can only advise - it is their game they are playing.
Recruiting Be clear about what is involved in joining WoV. We are a family, and expect everyone to help everyone else in ejoying FS. We are looking for active players, and that does mean that we expect them to hunt at least daily to begin with (2-3 times if they hope to win the race), so you should tell them that before you recruit them.
Induction At very low levels, there is a lot these players won't know about FS, and tht you need to tell them. You will need to tell them how to get equipment (drops & AH), how to know which equipment to use (FS guides), the importance of equipment sets (more experience), where to hunt, and the importance of hunting monsters at or above their own level (FS hunting guids). There is a lot of useful information about this on our own website (I particularly liked the beginners guide to hunting when I first joined) and links to other information sites, so I'd suggest you make sure they find these early on. Since the guild equipment doesn't really kick in until level 12, you might like to give them their first set to get started.
These issues will take time. I'd suggest you let them know the key URLs immediately, tell them where to hunt for the first few levels, and give them their initial equipment. You can then take more time with the rest.
skills & Level-up I'd suggest you deal with this immeidately by telling them to wait! Since they have joined our guild, there is nothing useful they can do with their skill points until level 25. For level-up points you could suggest they put their first 30 points into damage and/or attack (no one will regret this later) which will then give them time to find what they enjoy about the game (hunting, PVP, ...) and talk through an appropriate strategy.
Guild Buffs Let them know the guild policy (any of us will provide buffs players need for free), but also make them understand that this costs us stamina, and so they should ask wisely. In particular, they should try to have maxed their stamina (or be very close to it) before they ask, and they should not ask for buffs that are no use (there is no point in asking for beserk if they already have enough damage to 1-hit kill). You should also tell them to think twice before asking for a buff they could give themselves.
Levelling Fast? In the end, we want them to enjoy FS, not win a race for us. But if they want to win, they probably need a bit of advice about ignoring elites & champions, ignoring quests that take to long of travel over too many regions, and about what buffs they really should have to hunt with (AL & LIB, maybe TH and MERC, maybe DBLR - but refer them to the starter's guide to hunting).
Longer Term issues PVP? Whether they get involved or not is up to them, but they will appreciate some advice on how to avoid its side effects. You should advise them how to bank gold, or hide it by bidding on saleable items in the AH, as holding too much will just get other people to attack them. If they suffer too much from being attacked, you might like to help them out with bounty tickets, and advice on equiment that deters other PVPers (high defense?).
FSPs & upgrades Depending on where they live, the best advice is to direct them to netsecure's list of working options, and his link to advice on how to make them work most often. They may also like some advice on which upgrades to get when (relative merits of backpack slots, max stam, stam gain, ...).
In Summary? Just enjoy helping them enjoy playing FS!
